I hate the word “effortless” when referring to personal style and fashion. Don’t we all WANT it to appear as though we put forth time and thought when we put our look of the day together? I certainly do — I want my look to evoke a feeling, create a vibe whenever I enter a space.
And then there’s “trendy”…or even worse, “on-trend.” Why would you want to follow a mass movement of anything artistic? I say forge your own path, create your own artistic worlds and let everyone else riff of of YOUR ideas instead!
That said, even I can’t help but be inspired–even moved to, say, copy elements of already-existing fashion moods–when I look through runway collections. This spring’s Haute Couture shows made me drool over wispy sheer fabrics, and ethereal draping of dresses, skirts, and all things floor-length. Technicolor pastels wove in and out of ombre gowns. Models wafted through layer upon layer of dreamy chiffons and silks and tulles.
Now, this isn’t the usual trash-glam, uber-textured, androgynous, elevated punk stuff I’m usually drawn to…most of the time, I hate anything dainty or light! But sometimes a girl’s just gotta be girly and springy and frivolous. And even with my springtime pastels, I color outside the lines. I pile on the distressed silver jewelry; I say pooh-pooh to snow and work a transparent wellie. I scrawl out a messy, inky cat-eye and give them a dark and chilly punk lip. What can I say other than Oi feel pretty?
